What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure performed by a dermatologist that works to gently remove the top layer of your skin. This will help even out your skin tone, brighten up your face, and can help fade acne scars. This is a simple procedure that typically does not cause pain and can be performed in as little as 30 minutes. You may need multiple treatments to get your desired effects.

There are two main types of microdermabrasion that can be done: crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion. Crystal microdermabrasion uses microfine crystals and shoots them from a small tube into your skin before vacuuming them back up. It works like an exfoliating scrub. Diamond microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped wand to do the exfoliating. Both are very effective at leaving skin soft, smooth, and radiant.

How Many Microdermabrasion Treatments Will You Need?

The number of microdermabrasion treatments needed depends on what your ultimate skin goals are. A single treatment will leave your skin feeling incredibly soft and looking beautifully bright. This may be worth it to you. However, if you are hoping to see long-term improvements to a specific skin condition, you will likely need several treatments. Typically, you will schedule six to ten treatments between seven and fourteen days apart. The frequency and number of treatments depend on the state of your skin and your goals. Talk to a professional, like the experts at Milestone Aesthetics, to get more specific guidance.

  • How Should I Prepare For a Microdermabrasion Treatment?

First and foremost, if you have a microdermabrasion treatment coming up in the next few days, use sunscreen or avoid the sun altogether. You don’t want to get a sunburn. You will also want to cease using your exfoliating products as well as Retin-A, and glycolic acid. Make sure to avoid waxing the area you are planning to have treated for a few days before the treatment.

You will also want to avoid aspirin or aspirin-based medication. On the morning of the appointment, avoid using topicals and make sure to show up to the appointment with a face free of makeup. The microdermabrasion treatment can be a little hard on your skin so you will have to put the treatment off if you have any irritation such as a sunburn, rosacea, or severe acne.

  • What to Expect After a Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion works on the surface of the skin and therefore, there are very few side effects. That being said, you may experience some tenderness, swelling, or minor bruising. Your skin will likely be a little pink after treatment. The coloration will fade within a few hours.

You may feel like you have a minor sunburn for a day or two after your microdermabrasion treatment. You should probably avoid acne treatments such as toners and prescription cleansers for a day or two after your microdermabrasion treatment as your skin will be sensitive and they will likely cause burning. You can typically use makeup, simple cleansers, and moisturizers right after your treatment. Make sure to apply sunscreen as you will be more susceptible to sun damage after your microdermabrasion treatment.
